Friday cat blogging: goin’ shoppin’
Chris T. on Jan 31st 2008
This week has been a little crazy as I’ve tried to do some electronic spring cleaning, but I didn’t want to disappoint folks on the real reason you all read this blog. So here is a quick photo of Mahler with one of his favorite toys: a paper shopping bag.
Once one of [...]
Progressive Rome
Chris T. on Jan 31st 2008
Although I have significant disagreements with the Roman Catholic Church, I’m always happy to highlight stuff they do right — and they do a lot right. In particular, they get a rap for being antiquated and behind the times, conservative out of mere inertia. That is true on some issues, in some places, [...]
In defense of a marginal existence
Chris T. on Jan 31st 2008
My friend LutherPunk has an important post up about his frustrations starting a Lutheran mission church — the comment thread is at least as important as the post itself, so definitely check it out.
A lot of what he’s saying plays into some of the reasons I’m in the Independent movement. The mainline seems to [...]
Lee on Michael Pollan and the American food system
Chris T. on Jan 28th 2008
Lee has been posting a number of great things lately reacting to his reading of Michael Pollan’s bestsellers, The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food. I’m reading the former for a reading group I’m in.
Anyhow, definitely check out Lee’s posts — this whole topic is fascinating to me, especially the concerns about biodiversity [...]
A wishlist for reform of the Roman Office
Chris T. on Jan 27th 2008
So I’ve been using the contemporary Roman Office (Liturgy of the Hours/Divine Office in English) for several months now, though I still use the 1979 Book of Common Prayer for weeknight Vespers with my friend Mtr. R’s parish. I like many of the reforms of the ‘61 breviary that resulted in these new Roman [...]
JM Neale on Google Books
Chris T. on Jan 25th 2008
Another nice find — JM Neale’s Commentary on the Psalms nearly complete on Google Books:
Volume I: Psalm I to Psalm XXXVIII.
Volume II: Psalm XXXIX to Psalm LXXX.
Volume IV: Psalm CXIX to Psalm CL.
If anyone finds the third volume, that would be excellent. Nice reprints are available from Lancelot Andrewes Press, but they’re a little pricey.
Friday cat blogging
Chris T. on Jan 25th 2008
There was a short outage of about an hour earlier in the day as I did some last minute work on the server, but everything should be back now. So this post is a bit late, but hopefully it will speed you on your way from work or study to an enjoyable weekend.
First, [...]

Any comments made on the old site (since about 11:30pm on Thursday) will not be reflected on this site.
UPDATE: There were some slight problems in the move, but those should [...]
Best and worst of 2007
Chris T. on Jan 24th 2008
This is coming a bit late, but here is my yearly roundup of the best and worst of my reading for the previous year.
This past year I read fewer books than I have any year since I started keeping track of my reading in 2002. With a very busy travel schedule for work and [...]
Varlet and Illinois
Chris T. on Jan 23rd 2008
I enjoyed John’s description of Dominique-Marie Varlet as ministering to those God put in front of him. I appreciate his suggestion that Varlet’s act of confirming those hundreds of children in Utrecht is a critical starting point for this charism of the movement.
That has got me digging up more on Varlet, and I came [...]
