Office of the Dead/Mass for the Dead
Posted by Chris T. on Friday, July 20th, 2007
Inspired by Derek's Office of the Dead from his trial liturgies page, which adapted the traditional Office of the Dead for the Book of Common Prayer using Rite I language, I recently put together a booklet of materials for the Office and Eucharist using Rite II language. Unfortunately, I've had occasion to pray the Office of the Dead and say Masses for the Dead a number of times over the last several months. Now that I've prayed with this booklet a few times and shared it with some others, I thought I'd offer it for download:
Liturgies for the Dead (PDF, 160Kb)
The booklet includes complete Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer according to the BCP use of the Office, with readings from Matins of the Dead from the Roman Breviary, the necessary readings and some minor propers (Introit and Offertory, specifically) for the Eucharist, and an appendix of appropriate Collects for various occasions — two for the day of burial, one for a bishop departed, one for a priest departed, etc.

Some questions:
Good stuff! Nice to see the Dies Irae — it makes for a nice balance, if you look at all the Propers. (It sets up a nice movement from “day of wrath” to the antiphons at the end about Lazarus resting in the bosom of Abraham.)
Did your questions get cut off, Mark?
Thanks for the comment, though!
