Book needs (preferably) Lutheran home
Chris T. on Nov 30th 2006
We’ve finally sorted through most of the books we own after this last move, and I find I have an extra copy of The Book of Concord, the new Kolb/Wengert translation put out by Fortress about five years back. Hardcover, perfect condition.
If anyone needs a copy, please let me know via email. I’d prefer it [...]
Sarum breviary chants
Chris T. on Nov 30th 2006
Via the New Liturgical Movement blog, this site of chants from the Sarum Office is quite a find. It’s far from completed, still very much a work in progress, but what’s there is quite excellent. Go check it out.
Birth rates and evangelism in mainline Protestantism
Chris T. on Nov 29th 2006
Following the unfortunate remarks about birth rates and membership numbers by Episcopalian PB Katharine Jefferts Schori there have been a number of blog posts like this one defending her bringing birth rates into the question.
I’m disappointed that both Jefferts Schori and her defenders want to end discussion with this answer. Mainliners have fewer kids than [...]
Draft missal
Chris T. on Nov 28th 2006
As promised, here is a partial draft of Gaudete: A Missal for the Independent Sacramental Movement:
Draft of Missal (PDF, 565k)
Our movement is quite diverse liturgically, so this isn’t meant to end any discussions or provide definitive answers. Rather, it’s intended as a jumping-off point for jurisdictions to develop liturgies of their own, as well as [...]
Christ the King, missal tomorrow
Chris T. on Nov 27th 2006
We are back from a very full weekend in Washington, DC. The dedication of Our Lady of Mt Carmel went very well, but I’m holding off posting a recap for now — I’m hoping to get a photo or two from Fr Skip, who is on staff there.
We also went to the Basilica of the [...]
Happy Thanksgiving
Chris T. on Nov 22nd 2006
I’m sitting at the gate at Charles de Gaulle right now, should be leaving for Newark and then Durham in about a half hour.
So I just wanted to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving tomorrow! Sue and I are headed to DC this weekend for the dedication of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Old Catholic [...]
Burqas, feminism, and democratic values
Chris T. on Nov 21st 2006
As you’ve no doubt heard by now, the Dutch are seriously considering a ban on burqas and other garments that fully cover the face. It was proposed by their Immigration Minister and — despite the general wording of the ban — it is clearly aimed at Muslim women.
I do agree with the Dutch that disengagement [...]
Blogiversary!
Chris T. on Nov 17th 2006
Sorry I didn’t post yesterday — I was a little under the weather and spent a good chunk of yesterday in bed. I’m trying to catch up today, but I did want to mention that Wednesday marked one year of this blog’s existence. I began blogging (about linguistics, later on mainline Protestantism and politics) in [...]
Novus Ordo vs. Roman Mass in IC churches
Chris T. on Nov 15th 2006
Fr Jim’s post on Monday about a return to the Latin Mass (that is, Novus Ordo Mass in Latin, not the old pre-Vatican II rite) got me to thinking about where Independent Catholics are located in the various debates on liturgy that our Roman brothers and sisters have been carrying on since Vatican II. [...]
Single of the arbitrary time period: Amazing Grace
Chris T. on Nov 14th 2006
I remember that Chris Tilling used to do a single-of-the-week post, complete with epileptic dancing bear animation. I’ve been posting tons of academic theology and philosophy lately, and I thought it might be interesting to try something along musical lines. So for today, here is the song “Amazing Grace” from Willie Nelson’s new album, [...]
